The ancient Acropolis is one of Athens’ most visited historic sites which is home to the iconic Parthenon, which was originally built in 447 BC. After exploring these spectacular ancient ruins, visit the nearby New Acropolis Museum, where the archaeological finds of the Acropolis site are brought to life. Complete the cultural experience with a visit to the Ancient Agora, formerly the cultural heart of ancient Athens. Superb views of Athens await on the top of Lycabettus Hill. For a scenic walk, follow the Apostolou Walkway for 1 kilometre to the summit of Philopappou Hill (Hill of the Muses), perched 1,000 feet above sea level and boasting sweeping views of Athens. The site of Pericles’ famous speech in honour of ancient Athens’ fallen soldiers, Keramikos Cemetery has been a major landmark in Athens for over a thousand years. A mass of tumbling monuments and ancient statues (some of which have been replaced by protective replicas), the Cemetery Museum displays a vast collection of funerary urns, carved tombstones and jewellery. Located on the southern slope of the Acropolis, the Herod Atticus Theatre is a stunning 2nd-century stone amphitheatre which seats up to 5,000 spectators, making it one of Greece’s most spectacular live venues to this day. The annual summer Athens Festival is held from June to October, where you can see a live music or cultural performance surrounded by the magnificent ruins and sweeping views of this iconic site.

Displaying some of Greece’s most important historic finds in a grand neoclassical setting, the celebrated National Archaeological Museum in central Athens showcases the nation’s rich history and offers a glimpse into the world of the ancient Greeks. A fantastic day trip from Athens, take the scenic coastal drive to Cape Sounion, lying just to the south of Athens. Arguably the most charming, the volcanic island of Santorini boasts rugged cliffs dotted with picturesque villages. Budding historians and avid archaeologists shouldn’t miss the chance to discover Delphi, located 100 kilometres from Athens. This ancient city was the home of Apollo’s oracle, the prophetess Pythia, and the temple of Apollo, the winding Sacred Way, the temple of Athena Pronaia and even a huge training ground for competitors in the famous Pythian Games can still be seen today. Perhaps the most magnificent sight, Delphi’s theatre dates to the 4th century BC and offers incredible views across the valley below. Just three hours’ drive from Athens, Mount Pelion offers an idyllic retreat from the bustle of the city. Dramatic and varied landscapes range from green mountainsides and crystal clear lakes to traditional villages full of picturesque charm.
